I was born in the English historical town of Bury St. Edmunds and attended such fine educational institutions as Howard Primary,Howard Middle and County Upper School.

I worked at many of Bury's fine retail establishments until getting bored enought to try something fun.

So in the search of "fun" I joined the army.
That worked out as well as a punch in the face!
After leaving Her Majesties employment I tried my luck in Eastbourne for a while.
Then Returned to Bury.

After several years of more bordem I moved to the United States where I enjoy freezing winters and too hot summers with my Wifey and two kids.

I like to blog about what happens in my very average day to day life, and moan about everything that bugs me!

I've just signed up to be a soccer coach next season for my daughters team, which means two things.
1. I need to get fit again
2. I'm going to be losing more of my hair!

Perfect 10

Horray, Horray the kids have gone away!  No kids here folks, they have dissapeared Up North with their Grandparents so for the first time in a long time the Wifey and I have the house to ourselves and boy its quiet.  FANTASTIC!

And whats even better, its a four day weekend. Monday is Memorial Day here in the USA. A day designed for us to give thanks to those men and women who gave their lives for this country. Or as they say on TV its a day where you can buy one get one free, or everything is 30% off, or even perhaps buy now pay nothing for two years!

So when we kicked the kids out the door we planned our weekend out. First of all a nice quiet meal out at somewhere fancy. Well OK, fancy isn't us. We went to The Boneyard a place right up my street! If it can be put on a grill, you'll find it here. A lot of my friends had told me it was good, we'd just never had the oppertunity to go there.  I ordered a slab of ribs, my normal order at most places, Dawn ordered the salmon. Fine meals both of them. When the braught my ribs out it took me a minute or two to realise this gigantic slab was for me. I'd never see a rack that big before, and it sat on a bet of slice fried potatoes. I actually had to form a plan of attack to see how I was going to eat it! I worked from the very edges inwards. Half an hour later I looked at my plate and threw in the towel. I was stuffed and not even half way through. Thank heavens for Doggie Bags! Over here in the US asking for a doggie bag doesn't have the stigma it does in the UK. Back home I was always to embarresed to ask for one. Over here though you throw your hand up and shout something like "hey, gonna need two boxes over here." Everyone does it. Well you paid for it, take it home and heat it up!!

Now this morning we dicided to upset the kids. We promised them we wouldn't go and see the new Pirates of the Caribiean movie without them. OK, so we lied. First showing 10am this morning we were there. Back row center seats, my favorite place in a movie theater. And it was a perfect experience. None of the crap I normally expect, no crying babies, no moving people, no rustling of bags. Just the whole movie experience and no spoilage from outside sources.
If you've seen the first two movies in the series, you don't need me to tell you to go see this film. I won't put in any spoilers here, I'll just say that its a fine ending to the trilogy and still leaves you wanting more. The way Jerry Bruckheimer left this film you get the feeling that Pirates 4 wont be that far off.
At nearly 3 hours its really long, so I suggest people with small children do one of two things, either leave your kids home and wait for the DVD or make sure during the trailers that you take your kids to the bathroom otherwise you'll miss something half way through when they decide they can't hold it no more!

Yet Another Movie

Well it happened again. In a moment of weakness I agreed to go to the movies with the family. For those regular readers of my random blatherings you will already know that movie theaters and my stress levels don't mix well at all. AT ALL.  My ideal movie theater is one where there is no one in it but me, plus i'm at home and haven't had to travel to some stinky movie theater in the first place.

But as the kids had been good-ish and the wife hadn't moaned at me for a few days I agreed to go and watch Shrek the Third. I got the family there nice and early as I hate not getting my favorite seat. Center seat, right at the back row. If there is one thing I hate its people behind me kicking my seat.  It didn't matter as half of Stirling Heights had that same Idea as I did and turned up early. I managed to secure seats second row from the back, I stared at the people behind me in a kind of "kick my seat and you'll die look" which seamed to work thankfully.

The movie itself sadly wasn't that great. In fact for a Shrek movie I was pretty dissapointed. The other two movies had lots of laugh out loud moments but this one was a little light on the laughs. As movies go it was O.K. But for the final chapter of the Shrek Trilogy this needed to be better.  I'm sure kids will still enjoy it but don't expect anything thats overly special.

As for the rest of my time in the movie theater you know all to well what happened.

People moved about
kids talked
babies cried
although people switched off their phones, flipping them open to see who called cos you have it on vibrate still bugs me. (theater dark, phone back light, bright!)

Baby, Baby

You know when I decided to do this battle of the papers, I never expected in my wildest dreams that the Bury Free Press would strike out a lead against the Detroit Free Press.
The idea, for those too lazy to scroll down, is that each friday I take both papers and see who has the best headline.

the Detroit Free Press (http://www.freep.com) today leads with the Detroit Pistons Basketball team "Movin' On" to the next round of the play offs.
While The Bury Free Press (Http://www.buryfreepress.co.uk) has "BMW birth for baby Angel"  a story about a man who couldn't drive fast enough to get to the hospital so his girlfriend ended up giving birth at a gas station.

So the score for those who are counting  DETROIT FREE PRESS 0 BURY FREE PRESS 2

Paradise

I actually managed to get away this weekend. For the first time in two years I managed to get up north to the cabin and enjoy some hard labour at the expense of my Father In Law. I work my butt off their and don't care. when you have a view like this to look forward to ever morning, moving a few logs about and raking some stones is not a hardship.

Life up at the lake is just perfect. I never want to leave.

after the work, and drinking more beer than is really good for me I don't really have much to say about the trip. Other than this, to understand how tranquil it is there you have to experience it. So if you want to come over let me know, I'll take you there.

what I did get out of this trip...during the sober moments was these two classic comments.

From a little boy who belonged to a woman called Debbie.

"My Mom lets me go potty in the woods."

And from Debbie herself,

"wow you have an English accent, how did you get that then?"

Hello, periodically I look for my grandfather who our family lost contact with in the 1930's. Today I googled "auer windsor canada" because he was originally from Windsor Canada. (He later moved to Detroit.) This search directed me to your blog. It was something relating to John Auer and the bottom of the brown bottle...or something like that. After an initial look at your blog I didn't see anything. I thought rather than scour your blog, I might ask you if you remember the reference and what it might be pertaining to? Thanks for your time, Kristin Cohn, Lincoln NE
